  • British Summer School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. Staff are required to assist with pastoral care and look after the welfare of students at camp. All staff have to pass employment checks, including confirmation that they are not barred from working with children. It is a criminal offence for any person who is barred from working with children to attempt to apply for a position with British Summer School.

  • All British Summer School staff require native/near-native competence in English and must be eligible to work in the UK, which will be checked during the recruitment process

  • All British Summer School staff must be over the age of 18 at the start of employment and be medically fit for the role.

  • Experience of working with children/young adults in a multi-national environment would be an advantage

  • We are looking for people who are hard-working, reliable, energetic and happy to get stuck into whatever task may come their way!

  • All staff need to be available to attend the staff induction (senior staff attend a longer induction)

  • Decide which job would wish to apply for and submit your application. Please note that, during an interview, you will be asked to explain any gaps in the timeline in your CV.

    Short, informal telephone conversations may be arranged and carried out by a member of Head Office staff to determine an applicant’s suitability for the role in question.

    If successful you will be invited for an interview which may be face-to-face or by video all, depending on the circumstances (e.g. where you live, the role applied for and in order to adhere to any Covid-19 government guidelines).

    Where possible we will arrange assessment sessions (face-to-face or by video call) which last up to 3 hours and where you will complete group tasks and a one-to-one interview. As all roles involve close contact with children, your commitment to safeguarding children will be discussed. If you are unable to attend an assessment session we may offer an extended one-to-one interview, depending on the circumstances.

    EFL teacher applicants will undergo a second interview with the Academic Manager.

    We will request at least two references from former employers or college/university tutors. References may be taken up before your interview (you can indicate on the application form should you not wish your current employer to be contacted prior to a conditional job offer but this reference must be obtained prior to you starting your employment with us). As prospective employer, we reserve the right to contact any previous employer, not just the referees provided.

    We are unable to accept references from family friends or basic references. Furthermore, referees will be asked specifically if there is any reason why you should not be engaged in situations where you have responsibility for, or substantial access to, persons under 18. Any offer of employment may be withdrawn if references are not received, are inadequate or it becomes evident that you have knowingly withheld or have given misleading or false information.

    All applicants will be told the outcome of their application.

    If successful you will be sent a conditional job offer subject to receipt of:

    Proof of identity and (where applicable) your qualifications (we will need to see originals before you start with us)

    Proof of your right to work in the UK (e.g. British or Irish citizen, EU citizens with pre-settled or settled status from the EU Settlement Scheme or a work visa; again, we will need to see originals before you start with us).

    A satisfactory Enhanced DBS check (and Police ‘Certificate of good conduct’ if resident outside the UK); we will assist you with the application and pay the full cost of the check(s)

    Checks against the “Barred List” and, if applicable, “Prohibited List” will also be carried out.

    Once all safer recruitment checks have been carried out satisfactorily, you will be sent a contract together with additional documentation (such as job description, privacy notice, a summary of our safeguarding policy)

    Once we have received your signed contract and other required documentation we will send you our Employee Handbook and some other information/advice on what you need to do before you start work.

    If we have not been able to see original documents or certificates, you must present these to us at Induction or on arrival at camp and before taking up your appointment. Copies will be kept in your staff file,

    If your application is unsuccessful, all documentation relating to your application will be confidentially destroyed no later than 12 months after the date you are informed of the outcome.
